New Year, Better Me!

Has anyone noticed the trend every. single. year. Ya know when everyone, everywhere is talking about what a terrible year 20-whatever was and how they can’t wait for it to be over? The sarcastic memes of “leaving 2018 in the trash with your ex…” seem to be flooding our Instagram feeds, and quite frankly, it’s getting repetitive. Let’s try something new this year. Instead of falling into the mundane and overly illustrated attitude of the “woe is me, thank goodness this is over” paradigm, let’s take a minute to reflect on lessons learned from the previous year. Let’s honor our growing pains and formulate fresh and empowering ways in which we can improve ourselves moving forward. Sound good?  

Overall 2018 was good to me. 

Let’s recap:

  • Rang in the New Year with my best friends in the entire world, in the city I love.
  • Spent Nawruz (Persian New Year) in New York City with my family.
  • Had one of the most unforgettable days of my life on my 26th birthday.
  • Hosted the first ever Ever Forward Foundation event with my husband and raised a collective$15,000 for the VCU Children’s Hospital.
  • Spent Mother’s Day with my mom and aunt at The St.Regis for afternoon tea.
  • (Almost) mastered a few inversions in my yoga practice.
  • Lived out my Gilmore Girls dream and toured Harvard University.
  • My big sister got engaged to our favorite guy (ah!).
  • Enjoyed watching the World Cup finals at the newly renovated Audi Stadium in D.C.
  • Dyed my hair black after 5 years of being a wannabe blondie.
  • Took a very special girls trip to France with my mom and sister.
  • Drove from East Coast to West Coast with my husband and pup by my side.
  • Reveled in the beautifully colored streets of Cartagena, Colombia.
  • Lived out my lifelong ambition and moved into my dream loft in Los Angeles.

Looking back is such a gratifying and powerful feeling. Everything I have done, seen, and experienced in just 12 short months makes me so appreciative of this life we’re given and excites me for what is inevitably to come. With that being said, all these experiences have taught me a great deal about myself. How I’ve grown, how I’ve changed, and most importantly, what I still have to improve on.

Lessons Learned:

  • Rising above may not always send the right message.
  • Blood isn’t always thicker than water.
  • Save money wherever you can.
  • Know your value and honor it.
  • You can’t make everyone happy.
  • The side hustle is a real thing.
  • You’re just one person. 
  • Take control of your emotions.
  • Do what makes you feel the most yourself.
  • Make lists and plan ahead.
  • Don’t take exercise for granted.
  • Do away with toxic people.
  • Don’t be afraid to speak your truth.

Now to the good stuff.

We see this every year. Everyone starts talking about what they want to achieve in the new year. “Stop gossiping.”. “Be less bitchy.”. “Workout every day.”. Not to say that these aren’t great goals, but let’s be honest, it’s kinda BS right? We create a generic list based off what others are saying or what we see on social media, not things we actually believe in or want to improve on. This year I decided not to come up with ridiculous resolutions that I’ll inevitability start slacking off on a few months in. I want tangible. I want things I can measure and use daily. I want my resolutions to be built on every day, every week, every month, and every year. I don’t want something short term I achieve this year only to move onto to something else next year. We are humans and thus, we evolve.

This year I decided to hone in on a list of “lifestyle modifications” I want to incorporate in my every day routine from this point forward.

So here it is.

Lifestyle Modifications:

  • Drink more water.
  • Switch up gym routine, regularly.
  • Repeat peoples’ names when being introduced.
  • Don’t speak out impulsively.
  • Get creative with dinner meals.
  • Be consistent.
  • Say hello and introduce yourself.
  • Eat with purpose.
  • Make eye contact and say “Good Morning”.
  • Ask questions.
  • Give 110% of yourself 100% of the time.

And there you have it! Lessons learned and modifications for years to come!

I’m challenging myself to make this a year of action. I want to make my presence known and be disciplined and steadfast in everything I do. So if you haven’t done this yet, I urge you to try it. Take some time out to reflect on the year you had—the good and the bad. What did you learn? What were the most powerful lessons you want and need to remind yourself of in this next chapter of your life? Then, make a list of your own lifestyle modifications. Who do you want to be? Picture the ultimate you. What does this person look like, physically, mentally, and emotionally? What do you need to do to achieve that image? Make a list and be realistic, then check in with yourself. Go back and take inventory as frequently as you need and make adjustments as you go. Remember, you don’t need to wait an entire year to create new goals for yourself. The time is NOW! So get up and get going. 

It’s going to be an amazing year, I can feel it!
